Retired principal secretaries (PSs) Tuesday launched an association to help the government address critical issues affecting the public sector.
Chairperson for the association, Steven Matenje, said the former controlling officers will pool together their skills and expertise to help the government run its affairs effectively.
“Our aim is to harness diverse skills and expertise to contribute to national development through public administration and public service delivery so that the country can achieve Malawi 2063,” Matenje said at the launch, which took place at Malawi School of Government in Lilongwe.
Matenje said the group that was founded in 2018, wants to be part of solutions needed by the government in the development of the country.
“We are not here to expose government weaknesses; we are here to identify the challenges and provide the solutions,” Matenje added.

Deputy Secretary to the President and Cabinet Janet Banda said the association will provide an organised pool of well-trained former PSs who can be considered for roles such as those of ambassadors.
Banda said the services that will be provided by the group will enhance public sector enablers for the successful implementation MW2063, the country’s long-term development plan.
“Government will be able to utilise the retired PSs in a coordinated manner. Among others, government will continue to invite retired PSs to serve in various capacities such as Cabinet ministers, high commissioners, ambassadors, directors of government companies and project coordinators,” Banda said.
MSG Director-General Asiyati Chiweza said the institution would like to tap from the PSs’ knowledge to contribute to MW2063.

“They are mature people who can offer solutions to the public service, so we can draw lessons from the past on what worked well and challenges in the public sector,” Chiweza said.
Meanwhile, government says in a bid to improve the welfare of retired civil servants, it has negotiated with the Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm) to consider the retired civil servants in its medical scheme.
