The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has said affiliates that are failing to hold activities aimed at sustaining their operations will be offloaded.

Speaking during his tour of a Darts Association of Malawi (Dam) camp training at Civil Service Sports Club in Lilongwe City on Sunday, MNCS Board Chairperson Jim Kalua said they wanted associations that were passionate about their activities.

“I would like to advise Dam to conduct fundraising activities in order to sustain its programmes; otherwise, from next year, it would be one of the associations to be offloaded as liabilities. It is no longer business as usual in sports nowadays. Associations should do all they can to improve the welfare of their athletes.

“They should be in the forefront with efforts to generate resources for their games. The government cannot do everything for them. So, we want to see them out there hunting for partnerships with individuals, companies and organisations that can help them,” Kalua said.

He encouraged the players to work hard so that they deliver for Malawi in the East African country.

Dam President Peterkins Kayira assured that they would take heed of the advice.

“We will go full throttle with various fundraising drives as the government cannot fund all sports disciplines fully on its own. We, as sports associations, must be engaged in fundraising activities in order to sustain our programmes. We thank the board chairperson for his passion to develop sports in Malawi without considering some sports that are considered minor,” Kayira said.

The players are camping in preparation for the African Continental Tour 3 in Nakuru, Kenya, on July 25 and 26.

Malawi emerged runners-up in the Africa Continental Tour 1 in Nairobi, Kenya, in March this year.

This saw the team missing out on qualifying for the global championship by a whisker.

The world championship took place in Frankfurt, Germany, in June.

Malawi later got the chance to have a go at the competition when champions Uganda could not secure visas.

However, the opportunity slipped through Malawi’s fingers with just seven days, including a weekend, before the competition.

Kayira said the period was too short to obtain visas since the German Consulate is in Zambia
