St Andrews International High School in Blantyre makes its first melodramatic footstep in 2024, bringing William Shakespeare romantic play Romeo and Juliet.
This is a play that has been performed several times by different groups and some of the theatre groups that have starred it include Nanzikambe.
Shakespeare stitched the play early in his career about the romance between two Italian youths from feuding families.
It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed.
The school will stage three performances for the production starting tomorrow, followed by two other acts on Friday and Saturday.

“This is the most famous love story of all time and we decided to do it again. Actually, we have a community performance on Wednesday (tomorrow afternoon). This one is free for those working in theatre, music, dance and art in general,” the school’s drama teacher Kevin Troughton said.
He said there will also be a free show for students from other schools.
“After these, then we are up with the three public performances,” Troughton said.
The drama teacher added: “The story starts from the end of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, except that, in this version, Juliet decides not to kill herself over Romeo”.

Having staged a number of musical productions that have entertained people in recent times, Troughton said the play is also a musical.
“It is packed with well-known songs made by famous artists like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Black Eyed Peas and Katie Perry. The students have been undergoing massive rehearsals and they are ready,” he said.
