The Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has said strengthened financial controls and accountability will be key to sustaining growth and improving the administration of netball in the country.
Nam President Vitumbiko Gubuduza said the association would continue strengthening systems to ensure all funds received and spent by teams, district committees and other affiliates are properly documented and accounted for.
“Strong financial controls can help Nam prevent financial leakages, improve budgeting, strengthen donor and sponsor confidence and make it easier to demonstrate how resources are being used,” she said.
Gubuduza was speaking in Salima during Nam’s annual general meeting (AGM), where affiliates reviewed the association’s activities, finances and progress during the 2025-26 reporting year.

She said greater accountability could also attract more commercial partnerships, as sponsors and development partners were more willing to invest in organisations that had credible financial systems.
“Improved financial management could provide Nam with a stronger foundation to expand grassroots programmes, improve competitions, develop players and enhance national teams’ performance,” she said.
Delegates to the AGM also discussed an issue pertaining to an audit finding involving K65 million that was transferred to teams, district committees, competitions committees and associations without adequate supporting documentation.
Gubuduza said the money reached the intended recipients but lacked acknowledgement receipts confirming receipt.

“If you really look at the K65 million that is being referred, it is funds that went to the right places. However, there was no confirmation of receipt,” she said.
Gubuduza said good governance and financial accountability would remain central to Nam’s operations during the 2026-27 reporting year.
“I think governance is the cornerstone of any organisation,” she said.
She said Nam would strengthen financial controls by ensuring all recipients properly document funds received and spent.
