RARING TO GO—Temwa

By Mabvuto Kambuwe & Praise Majawa:

Malawi Women’s National Football Team striker Temwa Chawinga is beaming with confidence ahead of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals in Morocco.

Temwa was speaking Tuesday after joining the Scorchers camp in Morocco.

The United States-based striker arrived in Morocco on Sunday night ahead of the Wafcon finals.

“I want to thank God for being here after a long time without playing for the national team. It is every player’s dream to play for the national team,” she said.

The Kansas City Current striker said she was ready to deliver during Wafcon finals.

“My teammates and the technical panel gave me a warm reception. I am excited to be part of the historic Wafcon finals qualification. I have all the hope that the team will do well during the Wafcon finals,” the Scorchers vicecaptain said.

Temwa said the Wafcon finals would also provide a good platform for Scorchers players to clinch deals abroad.

“Playing at big tournament such as the Wafcon finals marks an improvement for us. This can be a chance for more players to be spotted by some foreign teams. We have more exciting and young players in the squad.

I am sure the agents will keep a close eye on such players from Malawi.

“We have been participating in Cosafa [competitions] but this is a big competition. I am sure most players will be scouted to play outside Malawi in top leagues,” Tema said.

Temwa is expected to take part in the Scorchers practice match against Ghana at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat Thursday.

The match will be her first one for the Scorchers after over one year of absence due to injuries and personal issues.

She last played for the Scorchers in a 2-0 loss to Zambia in a friendly match in Lusaka, Zambia, in February 2025.

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili said last week that the arrival of Temwa would boost the Scorchers’ chances of reaching the last-eight stage.

Malawi will meet Nigeria in their Group C opening match on July 28 at Al Madina Stadium before meeting Egypt at Moulay Hassan Stadium three days later.

The team will face Zambia at Al Madina on August 5.

Two top teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
