Mighty Tigers’ 39-year stay in the top flight league came to an end yesterday after they were relegated from the TNM Super League when they narrowly lost to Blue Eagles 1-0 at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.
Tigers had never been relegated since joining the league on its formation in 1986.
However, Lanken Mwale’s goal deep in added time of the second half handed Eagles victory while condemning the 1988-89 Super League champions out of the league.
Following the result, the Kau-Kau side has 27 points and even if it wins its last match of the season, the maximum tally of points will not be enough to displace 13th placed Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, who have 31 points from the same number of matches.
Tigers join Songwe Border United, who were already relegated from the top flight league.

Tigers coach Trevor Kajawa said it was painful that his charges had lost a match they were supposed to win.
“Maybe we became complacent towards the end of the match and, then, lost concentration, allowing them to score,” he said.
In another match, Silver Strikers thrashed Mzuzu City Hammers 3-0 to dent the Northern Region-based side’s survival hopes.
Hammers have 28 points and if they win their last match of this campaign against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, the odds are stacked against them when their goal difference is compared with that of Mafco and Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, who have 31 points each and a superior goal difference.

Following the win, Silver remain third but have tied on points with second-placed Bullets, who have a superior goal difference of 36 goals, four ahead of the Bankers.
At Silver Stadium, Festus Duwe scored a first-half brace whereas Aubrey Simbi scored into his own net deep in added time as Hammers lost.
Elsewhere, Civil Service United came from behind to beat Karonga United 2-1 at Karonga Stadium in Karonga District.
Alfred Chizinga gave Karonga the lead before Righteous Banda claimed a second-half brace for Civil.
In another match, Creck Sporting Club edged Goshen City Dedza Dynamos 1-0 after Patrick Macheso scored in the 17th minute.
