By Peter Mazunda:
On Wednesday, we gathered to honour the life and legacy of Geoffrey Mr Splash Kapusa before his burial at MkandaVillage, Malosa, in Zomba yesterday.
As one of Mr Splash’s closest companions from the inception of Television Malawi (TVM), I am privileged to reflect on the remarkable journey we shared. Mr Splash was a cherished friend, visionary in broadcasting, and beacon of joy to all who knew him.
Mr Splash was not just a colleague; he was a comrade-in-arms, a partner in adventure, and a confidant in the tumultuous world of journalism. Together, we embarked on countless endeavours, from humble beginnings to soaring heights. Our bond was forged in the fires of creativity and camaraderie, as we breathed life into the very fabric of television in Malawi.
One particular memory stands out amongst the tapestry of our shared experiences—a daring venture into the skies with former president Bakili Muluzi, he had a two-day state visit in Libya, where we conceived the audacious notion of an interview mid-flight. It was quintessential Geoffrey— bold, unyielding, and filled with an irrepressible zest for life. His determination, courage, and free spirit were infectious, igniting a passion within us all to push boundaries and pursue our dreams with unwavering resolve.

Geoffrey possessed a rare gift—the ability to infuse joy into every moment, to weave laughter into the fabric of our lives. His infectious enthusiasm, coupled with his innate storytelling prowess, could illuminate even the darkest of days. And when adversity reared its head, Geoffrey stood resolute, unafraid to voice his discontent yet always quick to extend a hand in reconciliation.
But perhaps Geoffrey’s greatest lesson was one of unbridled self-expression and unapologetic self-indulgence. He taught us the importance of savouring life’s simple pleasures, of reveling in the beauty of the moment, and of embracing our true selves without reservation. Who could forget his impromptu spree in Tripoli, Libya acquiring four pairs of glasses with the declaration, “This is for me, so I look good— Splash on. A Geofuuuuu tsomanoooo”?
In his passing, Geoffrey leaves behind a legacy etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was more than a colleague; he was a mentor, friend, and a guiding light whose spirit will continue to illuminate our path long after he has bid us farewell.
Geoffrey’s laughter echoes in the corridors of our memories, his spirit dances in the winds of change, and his legacy lives on in the stories we shared. Though he may have departed this earthly realm, his indomitable spirit will forever remain etched in the annals of time.

Early Days
Geoffrey and I embarked on this adventure together, back when TVM was just a fledgling project. We were pioneers, fuelled by a shared vision to bring stories to life through the lens. Our journey took us to Namibia for broadcasting training, where Geoffrey’s enthusiasm and determination shone brightly. He was more than a colleague; he was a friend who laughed with me, dreamed with me, and believed in the magic of television.
Music Splash era
Music Splash programme became our canvas—a show that resonated with audiences across the nation. Geoffrey hosted it with flair, introducing himself as Geoffrey, Mr Splash, a name that became synonymous with joy, rhythm, and entertainment. His charisma lit up the screen, and his storytelling skills were unparalleled. Whether it was an interview with an artist or a behind-the-scenes glimpse, Geoffrey painted vivid pictures with his words.
Fearless and Authentic
Geoffrey was never one to shy away from expressing his opinions. If something did not sit right, he would voice it—boldly and unapologetically. His courage was infectious, and he stood his ground, even when the winds blew against him. And when he was wrong, he would say, “Sorry,” with grace—a lesson in humility we all carry.
Lessons Learned
Being by Geoffrey’s side taught me invaluable lessons:
Determination: If you want something, go after it relentlessly. Geoffrey’s passion fuelled his journey, and he never settled for mediocrity.
Joy Amidst Challenges: No matter the environment—be it a bustling studio or a dusty road—Geoffrey found joy. He taught us to celebrate life, even when the odds seemed stacked.
Spoiling Ourselves: In Tripoli, he bought four pairs of glasses, declaring, “This is for me to look good—Splash on!” His self-love was infectious, reminding us to pamper our souls.
Farewell, Mr Splash
As we bid farewell to Geoffrey, let us remember his laughter, stories, and his unwavering spirit. He leaves behind a legacy—a legacy that lives on in the hearts of those he touched. And so, Geoffrey, as you soar beyond the skies, may your splash continue to ripple through eternity.
Geofuuuuu Tsopanoooo! Rest well
