In an effort aimed at giving people a variety in its combo of activities, Chitoliro Productionz, organisers of Urban Music People (UMP) Festival, have announced that they have added the Miss UMP beauty pageant to the menu.
And, so, festival goers should brace to see a beauty pageant that will crown the Miss UMP during the festival, dubbed The Evolution, to be held at Cape Maclear in Mangochi from October 25 to 28 2024.
Chitoliro Productionz has also announced its UMP fashion award recipient Mabel Khonje, renowned for her creative flair, as fashion brand ambassador.
Khonje, known for her Boudoir by Doll Mabel brand, will be part of the design to be showcased.
She also joins the festival’s core team to curate Miss UMP pageant, ensuring an unforgettable fusion of beach fashion and tourism.

“I am very excited, honoured and humbled to be the face of such a festival. People should expect glam, fun and something Malawi has never seen before,” Khonje, who has held a number of fashion events in the country, said.
The organisers said that to blend fashion and tourism, UMP aims to elevate its fashion quotient by introducing a captivating blend of elegance and charm with the inaugural Miss UMP beach beauty pageant.
UMP spokesperson Marie Thom said the beauty pageant is more than just a showcase of physical beauty.
“It is a celebration of confidence, charisma and the vibrant spirit of our lakeshore communities,” she said.

“Imagine picturesque settings, stunning swimsuits and contestants radiating charm under the sun. That is the essence of Miss UMP,” Thom added.
She said that the Miss UMP office will be active all year round as the UMP Festival project cycle to carry out the ongoing activities of the festival in promoting tourism and elevating urban culture in lakeshore areas to contribute to socio-economic development of the country and enhancing African positive narrative.
Thom said in addition to the beauty pageant, UMP Festival will collaborate with major fashion stakeholders in Malawi and feature a diverse array of fashion centric events including fashion shows.
Some of the acts that have already been announced to perform at the festival include Onesimus, former Big Brother Africa representative Lomwe, Phyzix, Mario Bros, Gibo Pearson, Nepman, Afana Ceez, Zonke Too Fresh, Temwa, Trumel and Bucci.
UMP returns this year after being out of the limelight for seven years.
The event began as a mini concert at Grin Bamboo in Blantyre in 2009 before it made strides as Urban Music Party before rebranding to Urban Music People.
The event, which has featured several renowned artists and unearthed talent, has been held at venues such as BAT Ground in Blantyre, French Cultural Centre, now Blantyre Cultural Centre, and Blantyre Sports Club.
