Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it will introduce football awards to be held at the end of every season in collaboration with competitions’ sponsors.
The Fam Executive Committee agreed on the move during the second quarterly meeting held in Salima District on Saturday.
At present, every competition sponsor, in conjunction with Fam, honours outstanding teams and individuals at the end of their respective tournaments.
However, in many countries, the awards are held at one event at the end of every season.
Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the association has long envisaged having its own awards’ ceremony to honour teams and individuals.

“We have already started engaging sponsors so that we host the event. We need to treat the awards ceremony with utmost respect. Other countries honour teams and individuals at one event. As such, we want to emulate them,” Zakazaka said.
The football awards will be held annually to honour coaches, players, teams, referees and other stakeholders in the country.
This means awards for all Fam-sanctioned competitions, including the TNM Super League, FDH Bank Cup, Airtel Top 8 and the Castel Challenge Cup ,will be held at one event at the end of a season.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President Gilbert Mitawa was reluctant to comment on the matter.

“I think Fam would be better placed to clarify as we are an affiliate of Fam,” Mitawa said.
Sulom, in conjunction with TNM plc, organises end-of-the-season awards for the TNM Super League stakeholders.
Sports analyst Parry Chinyama said the arrangement would bring sanity to award ceremonies.
“This is the best way of honouring individuals and teams at the end of every season. I hope all regional football associations will be included,” Chinyama said.
Fam has introduced the football awards one month after Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) announced the introduction of inaugural awards slated for May 9 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Four local female Malawian players, namely Tabitha Chawinga, Rose Kabzere, Leticia Chinyamula and Mercy Sikelo, have also been nominated for Cosafa Footballer of the Year, Most Women’s Promising Player and Female Goalkeeper Award, respectively.
Confederations of African Football and Fifa hold gala awards yearly.
