Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Walter Nyamilandu Thursday returned to the international football fold when he was elected Confederation of African Football (Caf) executive member representing the Council of Southern African Football Associations region.
The elections took place during Caf’s annual general meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Nyamilandu won the seat after defeating Mohammed Ally from Mauritius and Mokhosi Mohapi of Lesotho.
Out of the 54 votes that were cast, Nyamilandu got 35 whereas Ally and Mohapi amassed 15 and three votes, respectively.

Nyamilandu described the win as an honour and privilege.
“I am extremely grateful for the overwhelming support. I treasure the trust and confidence of the voters in my leadership. I look forward to playing my meaningful role in moving African football forward.
“This is for the people of Malawi who deserve to be on the frontline of shaping and influencing the future of the world. It is my sincere hope that this victory will inspire my fellow Malawians to keep pursuing their dreams, not to be undaunted by setbacks that will come their way,’’ he said.
Malawi National Council of Sports has since congratulated Nyamilandu for achieving the feat.

Sports Council’s letter, issued Thursday and signed by Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa, said it had learnt with great excitement and joy news that Nyamilandu is now a Caf Executive Committee member.
“MNCS is of the view that the decision by Caf members to elect Mr. Nyamilandu into the Executive Committee shows the trust the continental body has in Mr. Nyamilandu and Malawi.
MNCS believes that the election of Mr. Nyamilandu will bring Malawi to the table where top football decisions affecting the African continent are made. As council, we believe that the exposure and experience Mr. Nyamilandu will acquire while serving as Caf Committee Member will help him further develop the game of football here in Malawi,” the letter reads.
Nyamilandu has been Fam president for over 15 years but has not declared if he will seek re-election during the December 16 polls.
The Fam boss is also a Cosafa executive member and served as a Fifa Council member after defeating South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan in 2018.
He, however, lost the Fifa seat to Nigerian Amaju Pinnick during elections held in Rabat, Morocco in 2021.
