Installation and system requirements

qutebrowser is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as macOS and Linux. On Windows, installation options include an installer from the latest GitHub release and a standalone ZIP. The notes do not specify additional hardware or software requirements.

After setup, the browser’s controls take some getting used to, so start with its built-in help and cheatsheet by pressing ?. Although clicking links and scrolling with a mouse are possible, qutebrowser is designed around keyboard commands, and common tasks are handled through its modes and command line.

How browsing works

qutebrowser keeps its interface minimal, centering the web page with a status bar and tabs rather than a collection of persistent controls. Vim-style keys handle scrolling, tab management, browsing history, and many other actions, making keyboard navigation the central way to move around.

To open a link without clicking it, enter hint mode. The browser places letter labels on links, and typing the label follows the corresponding destination. This approach is useful on pages with many links because it lets you select a target directly from the keyboard instead of moving a pointer across the screen.

The command line provides another route for browsing and configuration. Commands include completion for URLs, bookmarks, history, and settings, and can be used to open pages, manage tabs, or adjust browser behavior. This gives experienced users a consistent text-based way to carry out tasks that would otherwise require menus or mouse interaction.

Configuration and browser engine

Settings can be changed through the settings page or with the :set command. For more extensive customization, qutebrowser supports a Python configuration file named config.py in the profile folder. It can be used to configure keys and settings, providing a programmable option for users who prefer to shape browser behavior in code.

The browser is written in Python and built on Qt, using the Chromium-based QtWebEngine backend by default. It also includes built-in ad blocking and support for user scripts. These capabilities complement its command-oriented workflow without changing the fact that its main interaction model is keyboard-focused.

Who the workflow suits

qutebrowser is aimed at Vim users and other keyboard-focused browsers who want to navigate without relying on a mouse. Its hint labels, command completion, and configurable key bindings can make frequent browsing actions efficient after the controls become familiar. New users should expect a learning period because many operations are not presented as conventional on-screen buttons.

It does not support Chrome or Firefox extensions, including extension-based password managers, so workflows that depend on those add-ons may not transfer. Windows users should also account for manual version installation, as automatic updates are not available there.

Project and license

qutebrowser is free and open-source software distributed under the GNU GPL v3. Florian Bruhin (The-Compiler) and contributors maintain the project, which was inspired by dwb and the Vimperator and Pentadactyl add-ons. Its overall design prioritizes keyboard control and configurable behavior over a conventional, mouse-led browsing interface.
