President Lazarus Chakwera has said the World Bank has committed to continue helping Malawi to deal with challenges it is facing.
Chakwera was speaking at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe Thursday morning on arrival from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he took part in the inaugural Africa Human Capital Heads of State Summit.
At the summit, Chakwera had an engagement with World Bank Vice President (VP) responsible for Southern and Eastern Africa, Victoria Kwakwa.
“It was extremely important for us to touch base with the VP of the World Bank. You know, these are our closest partners and they assured us and reaffirmed their commitment to helping Malawi with its programmes despite the problems that we are facing or even because of the problems we are facing.
“It was extremely important for us to receive the message of hope seeing that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Chakwera said.

Writing on his Facebook page, the Malawi leader said, during the engagement, he appealed to the World Bank for increased support towards Malawi’s relentless efforts of rebounding the economy and chart a path for sustainable growth.
“I asked the international financial institution to continue being instrumental in Malawi’s productive and social sector as demonstrated by the power restoration programme, the Shire Valley Transformation Project Programme and other social support programmes.
“Dr Kwakwa appreciated Malawi’s commitment to the human capital agenda and pledged the bank’s assistance to help us overcome prevailing macroeconomic challenges,” Chakwera said.
At the summit, African leaders endorsed the Dar es Salaam Human Capital Declaration 2023.

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan underscored the importance of investing in people through quality education, healthcare, nutrition, job creation and skills development.
She said these are necessary to improve social and economic outcomes on the continent.
