Former Football Association of Malawi (Fam) presidential aspirant Willy Yabwanya Phiri is expected to launch what he calls Malawi Grassroots Soccer Development Foundation this weekend.
Yabwanya Phiri will roll out the foundation under a ball juggling mantra known as da,da,da.
He said the foundation, which is registered in Malawi and Canada, will give children a platform to showcase their skills.
“We aim at helping both young boys and girls in becoming self-reliant with different social skills, hence fighting poverty and unemployment, which are rampant among the youth in Malawi,’’ Yabwanya Phiri said.
The foundation will also help in combating child labour, drug and substance abuse, early marriages, school dropout cases and violence and exploitation.

The foundation’s mission is to equip and develop soccer talent among vulnerable and non-vulnerable boys and girls with necessary life skills so that they realise their inborn soccer talent and exploit their potential to the fullest.
Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson MacMillan Mwale welcomed the initiative.
“We, as a ministry, welcome the foundation wholeheartedly. We need more partners at grassroots level to help in developing football. These are initiatives we need to promote to build strong national teams,’’ Mwale said.
The foundation is a non-profit organisation and is Yabwaya Phiri’s brainchild.
