One of the players in the manufacturing sector, Zamm Investments, has described a recent press statement issued by the Competition and Fair- Trading Commission (CFTC) as unfortunate and victimisation of its products on the market.
CFTC published the statement on Tuesday, warning consumers and traders to desist from procuring, consuming and selling Cool Drop water products after some batches were found containing foreign products.
But in an interview yesterday, Zamm Investments Marketing and Public Relations Manager Collins Linyenga said they were surprised that the statement was issued when the company had rectified the problem and recalled all the affected batches.
“We acknowledge that we had a technical fault with our machinery. To be precise, it was the membranes which were damaged, which affected the osmosis.
“Only 500mls bottles were affected. Upon detecting this, we recalled all the batch numbers for 500mls from the market, and we engaged a technician from China to fix the machinery. Now everything is okay.

“As a matter of fact, we were the first to detect the problem and we informed the Malawi Bureau of Standards. We have been engaging them from day one up to now and we are surprised that the CFTC issued a statement a month after we have been doing our best to recall the product and had fixed the problem,” Linyenga said.
In a separate interview, CFTC spokesperson Innocent Helema said the commission has the mandate to protect consumers on the market from any unfair trading practices that are detrimental to them.
He said the CFTC has received information from consumers indicating that they had purchased water from the subject batches.
“We strongly believe that some consumers unknowingly consumed some of the affected water.

“Furthermore, some consumers have submitted that other batches, apart from the five listed, also have visible foreign objects. The commission will conduct investigations on these allegations and provide updates in due course,” Helema said.
