Organisers of this year’s Ziyara celebrations have donated food items worth K100 million to patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
They have since rated the gesture as important, saying it is part of preparations for this year’s Ziyara celebrations.
National Coordinator of 2024 Ziyara celebrations, Mohamad Aboo, said the donated items, which included food, were worth K100 million.
He said considering that the spirit of giving is embedded in Islam, they decided to donate the items and other things to support both patients and those working at the hospital.

Ziyara is an annual celebration where Muslims celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, such that, as part of the celebrations, Muslims are encouraged to do charity work by, among other things, helping those that are needy.
Aboo said the items included 2,000 food packs.
“We are encouraged by Prophet Mohammad—peace be upon him—to assist those who are vulnerable and this is part of what we are doing here. We have donated maize flour, milk, sugar, soya pieces, cooking oil as well as sanitary materials, among other things,” Aboo said.
One of the beneficiaries, Meria Kathumba, who has been in hospital with her child for a month, said the items she received would go a long way in easing some of the challenges she has been facing.

“I am thankful to those who have given us these items as we are in need of so many things. This donation will help alleviate some of the financial challenges I have been facing,” Kathumba said.
The celebrations continue with a career talk today.
On September 16, Muslims will participate in the Ziyara Parade.
The Ziyara celebration activities are being organised by the At- tariqatul Qaudiriya Sunni Association under the leadership of the Limbe Muslim Jamaat.
