Football legends in the country have hailed government’s plans to set up a welfare policy for retired sports personalities.
This comes few days after business mogul and philanthropist Thomson Mpinganjira rewarded 17 football legends with K1 million each for contributions towards Malawi football in Lilongwe recently.
One of the legends, Peterkins Kayira, said the formulation of the welfare policy for retired sports legends would help a lot.
“This is a welcome development for all sports personalities. It is sad that the majority of the sports personalities are destitute after their respective careers. We hope the policy will help the personalities to prepare for life after their careers,” Kayira said.

Another legend Austin Nyondo said the formulation of the policy is important.

“We cannot wait for it. I hope all the stakeholders will be consulted on the matter,” Nyondo said.
During the awards, Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire said the formulation of the policy was at an advanced stage.
“The policy will give us direction on how to improve the welfare of all sports personalities in the country,’’ Mkandawire said.
Mkandawire announced the formulation of the policy in Parliament earlier this year.
