Seven Kukoma Ntopwa players were treated as outpatients after they were involved in a road accident at Lizulu in Ntcheu District on Tuesday night.
The team was returning to Blantyre from Lilongwe following its unsuccessful defence of the Goshen Football Association of Malawi National Women’s Cup where the side lost to Ascent Academy 4-0 at Bingu National Stadium.
Following the accident, the seven were taken to Ntcheu District Hospital where they received treatment before being referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre for further medical examination.
Ntopwa owner Isaac Jomo Osman confirmed that all the players were treated as out-patients.

“We are lucky that the players escaped with minor injuries; no wonder, they were treated as out-patients. Of course, they are in pain following the impact and, as such, most of them are limping. They have been traumatised too,” Osman said.

Osman said the accident happened when the bus they were travelling in hit an oxcart after the driver failed to have a clear sight of the road resulting from the flashlight of a motorcade heading in the opposite direction.

However, Osman thanked National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Adellaide Migogo, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya and the team’s sponsors, Capital Oil Refining Industries.
“The women’s football boss [Migogo] has been supportive. We were also with Fam Competitions Chairperson Felister Dossi throughout. Our sponsors have also been with us,” Osman said.
Migogo said they were equally affected by the accident and that she wished the injured players quick recovery.
