Sunday, we will be joining the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day.
This year’s theme, ‘Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security’ is a reminder of why journalism matters and why it must be protected in every society.
Press freedom is sometimes spoken about as something distant or technical. In reality, it affects everyday life.
It decides whether people know the truth about what is happening around them or whether they are left in the dark.
It decides whether leaders are held to account or whether they can act without scrutiny. It also shapes whether citizens can trust the information they receive.

Journalism is about responsibility. It is about asking questions when answers are not given freely.
It is about investigating issues that affect the public even when it is difficult or risky.
It is also about giving a voice to people who are often not heard. Without a free press, many problems in society would remain hidden and unresolved.
A free press is important for peace. When people have access to clear and accurate information, it reduces fear and confusion.

It also reduces the spread of rumours that can cause tension. In countries where information is controlled or distorted, mistrust grows more easily.
This can lead to conflict or instability. When the press is free, it helps people understand what is really happening and supports calm and informed discussion.
Press freedom is also closely linked to human rights. Journalists often play a key role in exposing abuses.
They report on unfair treatment, corruption and violations of basic rights. Many of these issues would not come to light without media coverage.
When such problems are exposed, there is at least a chance for justice or change. When they are hidden, there is little hope for improvement.
Development also depends on a free press. Economic and social progress need information that is accurate and open.
Businesses, investors and citizens all rely on news to make decisions. If information is controlled or misleading, it becomes difficult to plan or build trust in systems.
A free press helps societies make better choices by providing facts and encouraging debate.
Despite its importance, press freedom is under pressure in many parts of the world.
Journalists face threats, intimidation and legal challenges. Some are prevented from reporting freely while others are punished for doing their work.
In more extreme cases, journalists face violence simply for trying to report the truth. These pressures do not only affect individuals. They weaken society as a whole.
Even where there is no direct violence there can still be subtle forms of control.
These may include restrictions on access to information, pressure from powerful interests or attempts to influence what is reported.
Over time, these actions can reduce the independence of the media and limit the public’s right to know.
This is why the role of journalists is so important. They carry a responsibility to report accurately, fairly and honestly.
Holding power to account is not about taking sides. It is about ensuring that those in authority act in the public interest.
It is about asking difficult questions even when it would be easier not to. It is about making sure that truth is not replaced by convenience.
In today’s world, the role of professional journalism is more important than ever. Information spreads quickly through social media and other platforms.
While this has benefits, it also brings challenges. False information can spread easily and sometimes faster than the truth.
In this environment, trusted journalism helps people separate fact from fiction. It provides verified information that people can rely on.
However, press freedom is not only the responsibility of journalists. Government has a duty to protect it through fair laws and respect for independence.
Public institutions should understand that scrutiny from the media is part of a healthy democracy not a threat.
Citizens also have a role to play by supporting reliable news sources and valuing truthful reporting.
The media industry itself must also reflect on its responsibilities. Trust is built through accuracy, honesty and fairness.
When mistakes happen, they should be corrected openly. When reporting is biased or unclear, it should be improved. The strength of journalism lies in its credibility and this must always be protected.
As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we should recognise that press freedom is not something that can be taken for granted.
It must be defended and supported every day. It requires courage from journalists, support from institutions and awareness from the public.
A society without a free press is a society that struggles to understand itself.
It is a society where problems are hidden and accountability is weak. On the other hand, a society that protects press freedom gives itself a better chance at peace, development and respect for human rights.
