President Peter Mutharika returned home Thursday from a private trip to South Africa, where he spent nearly two weeks.
The President and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika arrived at Kamuzu International Airport, where they were welcomed by Chief Secretary to the Government Dr Justin Saidi, Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga, senior government officials and members of the Democratic Progressive Party.
Mutharika left the country on March 1, 2026, his second external trip since returning to office.
His Press Secretary, Cathy Maulidi, said the President’s limited internal and external travel forms part of austerity measures designed to protect public funds from unnecessary expenditure.

“This is only his second trip outside the country since taking office, which I think is commendable. The President is determined to see his austerity measures fully implemented,” Maulidi said.
