Baka City have won this year’s edition of the K23.3 million Nyasa Capital Finance Cup for the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) zone.

The Simso and Innobuild Premier Division champions beat Iponga 1-0 at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday through a Joseph Mwambungu goal in the first two minutes of the final game.

The Clever Boys have broken the jinx to become the first team to win both the cup and the league.

Baka City Coach Davie Muyombe said the two trophies have inspired them ahead of their TNM Super League debut.

“It was a tough game because Iponga dominated the match but we defended the goal which we got early in the match. We need to build a good team to compete in the league,” Muyombe said.

On his part, Iponga Coach Edwin Kaonga said they lost due to poor officiation. “Our opponents were gifted a goal by the referee yet the ball did not cross the line,” Kaonga said.

Meanwhile, NRFA Vice General Secretary Desire Bellings Kiwombwe has appealed to the sponsors to continue bankrolling the cup as the three year contract has elapsed. Nyasa Capital Finance Directors have since pledged continued support.

The champions pocketed K1.6 million whereas the runners up received K650,000 and the third-placed side got K300,000.

This year’s edition of the cup started in October after the sponsors injected K70 million.
