Economics Association of Malawi (Ecama) President Betchani Tchereni has resigned from his position following his appointment as Secretary to the Treasury.
Last week, President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Tchereni as new Secretary to the Treasury, replacing McDonald Mafuta Mwale, who was appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
In an interview on Tuesday, Tchereni said he could not double as Ecama President and Secretary to the Treasury.
Tchereni’s resignation means that he only served as Ecama President for less than three months, having been elected to the position on November 9 last year.

According to Tchereni, his appointment as Secretary to the Treasury came with immediate effect for him to be at the epicentre of economic planning and management.

“Being that Ecama is also a watchdog of government activities, then I cannot be a watchdog of myself.
“This, therefore, necessitates that I should not be in the executive committee of Ecama in any capacity although I continue to be a member of this glorious association,” Tchereni said.
He observed that Ecama trustees would soon appoint an acting president.
During its elective conference in Mangochi on November 9 last year, the country’s economists body elected Bertha Chikadza as Vice President, James Kenani as Secretary General, Hamilton Kamwana as Treasurer General and Hope Mfuni as Vice Treasurer General.
