There are sanitation concerns at Malawi’s biggest and most modern sports facility Bingu National Stadium (BNS), which has been running without water for close to two weeks due to a pipe burst.
The situation has forced the facility’s clients to bring their own water for various uses.
A client who asked for anonymity said the situation is worrisome.
“We have gone without water here for more than three weeks now. Hygiene has now become a big problem. This is unfortunate and has the potential to force us to move elsewhere.
“Such a development may end up turning this stadium into a white elephant again. Management has not even communicated to us about what is happening,’’ the client said.

The facility has over 20 tenants, including two bars and some restaurants.
BNS Manager Ambilike Mwaungulu said they expect water supply to be restored by today.
“We have indeed been without water since last week because of a burst pipe under some concrete structures here, which led to a leakage. So we decided to cut off supply for maintenance but we have now finalised everything and water should start running Mwaungulu said. again by Friday [today],’’
The facility is expected to host a TNM Super League match between Silver Strikers and Ekwendeni Hammers tomorrow. However, the dry taps have not affected the football pitch as it uses a solar-powered water supply system.

BNS is also expected to host 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson MacMillan Mwale said he was aware of the water situation at the facility.
“We acknowledge that there has been no running water for one week but technicians are currently on the ground. The good thing is that the stadium did not host any match for the past two weeks; so, there might not be a big impact,’’ Mwale said.
