Malawi basketball champions Bravehearts Ladies have vowed to cause an upset when they make their maiden appearance at Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) in Cairo, Egypt.
The tournament is expected to throw off today December 5th to December 14th. Bravehearts are among the 12 teams taking part in the tournament. The team arrived in Cairo, Egypt Thursday.
Bravehearts patron Griffin Kalua said the girls were determined to write another piece of history.
“We are set for the tournament. We are here to represent Malawi and we will try our best to win games,” Kalua said.
Bravehearts Ladies are the first female team from Malawi to participate in the tournament. They earned a slot at the continental finals after finishing second during the qualifiers held in Namibia. Sporting Club de Luanda from Angola finished top of the qualifiers.

Kalua said he had assembled a good squad capable of upsetting any team.
“We might be underdogs but we have experienced players. We can match any team. Let them underrate us at their own peril,” he said.
Other teams include defending champions Ferroviario de Maputo from Mozambique, hosts Al Alhly Sporting Club (Egypt), APR from Rwanda, KPA from Kenya and First Bank from Nigeria.
Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) General Secretary Peter Gomani was optimistic that Bravehearts Ladies will do well. “We are expecting a lot from the team. They have good players and we believe they will surprise many teams,” he said.
