The Malawi Women’s National Football Team Coach Lovemore Fazili has said his charges are heading in the right direction ahead of their maiden appearance at the 2026 Caf TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals next year.
He was reacting to the team’s performance in the 2025 Tri-Nation Women’s Football Tournament at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
The Scorchers ended the competition with one point from two matches having drawn with Zambia 1-1 on Sunday, two days after they lost 2-1 to Zimbabwe at the same venue.
He said the two matches had exposed both positives and negatives. “Going forward, we have learnt a lot from the tournament. There are positives and negatives. As we continue our preparations, we are going to rectify our problems,” Fazili said.
But Fazili said he wants the team to play more friendly matches before the tournament. “ We have almost the full squad for the Wafcon finals. We need to have more friendly matches. The matches will help us to prepare well for the tournament,” he said.

During the Tri- Nation tournament, the Scorchers were without US-based striker Temwa Chawinga and Asimenye Simwaka due to injuries. But the duo could be ready for Wafcon finals in March next year.
Zambia assistant coach Charles Halubono also praised Malawi for their performance.
“We are now at the same level. I am very sure very soon both Malawi and Zambia will have strong teams,” Halubono said.
Malawi qualified for the Wafcon finals after beating Angola 2-0 on aggregate whereas Zambia defeated Namibia 7-2.
