Suzan Kachepa has become the first African female athlete to be awarded the prestigious title of International Master in the game of draughts (checkers).
Kachepa’s remarkable feat came after an extraordinary performance at the African Draughts-64 Championship held in Lusaka, Zambia, where she clinched five gold medals and a bronze one.
Speaking in Blantyre soon after the team’s arrival at Malawi National Council of Sports offices, Kachepa said it was an opportunity to participate in the tournament and described it as a valuable learning experience.
“I am determined to further improve my skills in upcoming events, setting my sights on even greater accomplishments,” she said.

The delegation, comprising 15 athletes, showcased their bravery by earning a total of nine medals for their country, including five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
Enoch Banda also contributed to the team’s success by claiming three medals, including two silver and one bronze.
The competition featured intense rivalries among eight other African countries, with Russia participating as a guest nation.

The Association of Draughts in Malawi (Adma) General Secretary Suzgo Alpha Nkhoma hailed Kachepa for her feat.
“This success will inspire and unearth more talented athletes who will represent Malawi at the upcoming Draughts World Cup scheduled to be hosted in Turkey next year,” Nkhoma said.
Malawi National Council of Sports Board Member Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa hailed Adma for the historic accomplishment, saying the institution is dedicated to assisting every member association.
“We will support our affiliates regardless of whether they are considered a majority or minority sport based on the results they bring. We will assist every sports discipline equally,” she said.
Mpinganjira, who is also the Chairperson for Sports Development, noted that it is the first time in Malawi’s sporting history for a single athlete to win five gold medals at a single tournament.
“The entire nation rejoices in this momentous occasion, acknowledging Kachepa’s immense talent and unwavering dedication to her craft,” Mpinganjira said.
Other participants were from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, DR Congo, Tanzania and the guest country, Russia.
