Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya and female executive member Felister Dossi have been appointed to the Fifa Council independent and standing committees.

Haiya has been appointed as member of the Future of Football Committee whereas Dossi is now a member of the world governing body’s legal committee.

Fifa announced names of members of the committees on Tuesday.

Following the appointments, Haiya and Dossi will serve in their respective committees for a period of four years, from 2025 to 2029.

The appointment of the two local football administrators is a milestone as they will be part of key decision making at the global level.

Haiya hailed Fifa president Gianni Infantino for entrusting him with the responsibility.

“I pledge to serve with dedication, integrity, openness and a forward-looking mindset. I carry with me the voice of Malawi, Africa and future generations, committed to shaping a football landscape that unites, inspires and endures,” Haiya said.

Former Ukraine captain Andril Shevchenko is the chairperson for the committee whereas Ravshan Irmatov from Uzbekistan is the vice chairperson.

The objective of the Future of Football Committee is to advise Fifa Council, Secretariat and Member Associations on strategic plans, policies and reforms, ensuring that football remains relevant, resilient, equitable and globally sustainable while effectively managing emerging trends.

Other members include Thomas Christensen (Denmark), Gijs De Jong (Netherlands) and Nestor Pitana (Ecuador).

In an interview yesterday, Dossi said he felt honoured with the appointment.

“I am honoured and humbled. But it is a big task ahead,” Dossi said.

Dossi said she was looking forward to contributing to the development of football at the global level.

“I am looking forward to using this appointment to learn while also supporting the advancement of football in Malawi. I am hoping that I will be able to create visibility and opportunities that benefit our local football,” she said.

Locally, Dossi heads the Fam Competitions and Marketing Sub-committee. She has vast experience as football administrator, having served at Fam for more than five years.

The objective of the legal committee is to advise Fifa internal bodies and committees on legal matters, ensuring adherence to the Fifa statutes and regulations.
