Team Malawi’s medal count at the ongoing African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia has given Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) hope that the country would soon be a force to reckon with in the region.
During the 2022 Region 5 Games which the country hosted in Lilongwe, Team Malawi collected 37 medals.
MNCS Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata said there were no specific goals given to Team Malawi apart from showcasing good performance and demonstrating athletes’ development progress programmes in line with the long-term project which the council set.
“Let me re-emphasise what I said before Team Malawi’s departure; I had given them no specific target because we are building athletes for the future. This is part of our building process. When it comes to performance, I am extremely impressed with most sport codes except for a few where we still have some work to do if we are to be competitive on the international stage.

“Further, it is important to reckon that the rating of a country’s performance is based on the gold medals. In this regard, Team Malawi has done extremely well with six gold medals for the first time in the history of these games. We expect a few more medals in the remaining sport codes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malawi Paralympic Committee President James Chiutsi said the improvement in the number of gold medals won is a sign that the building process is going on well.
