Football Association of Malawi (Fam) will wait a little longer to get K540 million extra funding it requested from the government for Malawi National Football Team activities.
In October last year, the association requested for extra funds from government for the two 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Tunisia.
Parliament approved the funds in November last year but government is yet to release the funds, two months after the Flames played the qualifiers.
Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire said all the documents were submitted to Treasury.
“We did our part and we are just waiting for the relevant authorities to release the funds,’’ Mkandawire said.

Due to lack of funds, the Flames nearly withdrew from the World Cup qualifiers.
Spokesperson for Treasury Taurai Samuel Banda asked for more time before he could comment on the matter.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was not readily available for comment yesterday.
Government has the responsibility of funding all national teams including for football and netball.

Meanwhile, Fam President Fleetwood Haiya paid a courtesy call on FDH Bank and platinum sponsors of the Flames on Tuesday.
“Our goal is to engage all sponsors to ensure we deliver value and secure long-term partnership,’’ Haiya told Fam Facebook page.
Apart from government, Fam has a partnership with FDH Bank as platinum sponsors of the Flames. Through the partnership, FDH Bank hiked Flames sponsorship from K120 million to K250 million annually for four years.
Apart from meeting FDH Bank, Haiya has met FCB Bank, Airtel Malawi and Castel Malawi.
The Flames defeated Liberia 1-0 away in the first match of the World Cup qualifiers before they lost to Tunisia by similar margin at Bingu National Stadium.
