The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) has called on President Peter Mutharika and his government to place the private sector at the heart of the country’s economic recovery efforts.
In his State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered on Friday and themed ‘The Path to Economic Recovery: Delivering a People-Centred Development’, Mutharika acknowledged the severity of Malawi’s economic challenges and outlined recovery as the government’s foremost national priority.
In its commentary, MCCCI welcomed the frank recognition of the country’s economic distress and the renewed focus on stabilisation and growth.
The chamber notes that Malawi is emerging from a turbulent period marked by acute foreign exchange shortages, persistent fuel scarcity, rising inflation and widespread business closures, conditions that severely disrupted private sector operations and undermined investor confidence.
It says addressing these structural constraints is fundamental to national recovery and argues that the private sector, as the primary engine of production, employment and exports, must be positioned at the centre of the reform agenda.

MCCCI has pointed out foreign exchange scarcity as the most pressing constraint facing businesses, citing findings from its business climate surveys and economic reviews, where limited and uncertain access to forex consistently ranked as the top challenge.
The chamber commended government plans to review foreign exchange regulations, saying improved forex management would enable firms to import critical inputs, resume full production and rebuild investor confidence.
“We continue to encourage the government to review the foreign exchange framework in a manner that prioritises productive sectors,” the chamber says, emphasising manufacturing, agro-processing and other export-oriented industries as key forex generators.
According to MCCCI, credible fiscal discipline can ease inflationary pressures, stabilise the exchange rate and create a more predictable environment for private investment.

On the production front, MCCCI has described the commencement of domestic fertiliser production as a strategic milestone.
Fertiliser remains one of Malawi’s top imports and a critical input in agriculture.
On industrialisation and trade, the chamber applauds the government’s commitments to strengthen cooperatives and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which constitute the majority of businesses in Malawi.
