Lands Minister Deus Gumba has asked Lilongwe City Council (LCC) to speed up the issuance of land documents to investors.
Gumba made the remarks yesterday when he engaged council management and councillors on land laws.
He also asked council officials to ensure that the allocation of land is done in accordance with the law.
“Realising that councillors and Lilongwe City are part and parcel of key stakeholders when it comes to management of land issues, we want to move on the same page. We do not want to leave them behind so that they should have a better understanding of what the law is all about in this country,” Gumba said.

He also said the ministry would, in collaboration with LCC, start allocating sectional title deeds for local citizens and foreign investors for development because they have already identified land in the cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu, adding that the land would be made available to people through Malawi Investment and Trade Centre.
On his part, Lilongwe City Mayor, Councillor Richard Banda, assured the minister that the council would speed up the process of issuing documents.
“Most of the developers are failing to develop land because of delays in approving land documents. So, going forward, we will make sure that we approve the documents as soon as possible once they are submitted to the council so that the developers can start developing the city,” Banda said.
In 2022, Parliament passed the Land (Amendment) Bill in which it prohibits the granting of land to persons who are not citizens of Malawi.
