A representative of the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has revealed that the Mchinji One Stop Border Post has seen a significant revenue increase from K1 billion per month in 2022 to over K3 billion each month in 2024.
MRA Deputy Commissioner for Operations Moses Masina made the revelation during a validation workshop on time release study for the one-stop border post in Mchinji District recently.
However, Masina was quick to acknowledge that there is room for improvement, citing delays in some processes at the border.
Director of Trade in the Ministry of Trade and Industry Charity Musonzo said the border had been performing averagely since 2022 but the report established lack of electricity as one of the major contributors to delays of processes, which necessitated necessary interventions.

“Malawi is performing on average and even slightly better. The challenges are mainly due to reliance on Zambian electricity, which has been affected by drought in the country. Both Malawi and Zambia rely heavily on hydro power,” Musonzo said.
Comesa European Development Fund Programme Manager Mshuka Kamwela expressed satisfaction with the report’s findings, noting that the border has improved significantly over the past three years.
Kamwela said in order to further enhance efficiency, they are working to ensure that all processes at the border are electronic.
“We have trained border agencies in how to use the new systems and installed computers in different borders,” Kamwela said.
