The Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) interim committee has been tasked with holding an extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM) to elect the association’s new executive committee.
Malawi National Council of Sports has provided the guidance after Nam affiliates set up an interim committee on June 3 at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe following last week’s resignation of the Nam Executive Committee.

A statement which MNCS Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata has signed indicates that the EGM is expected to elect Nam Executive Committee members to finish the current term, which expires next year.
“Following the recent developments at Netball Association of Malawi: resignation of the Executive Committee and the election of an interim committee by regional and district committee members, Malawi National Council of Sports Council has provided the following guidance to Nam as a way forward.
“The interim committee chosen on the 3rd June 2024 will run the affairs of Nam up to a date of an Extra Ordinary General Meeting which will be called by the interim committee, and the EGM shall dully elect a committee that shall run Nam up to the end of the tenure of the current term in line with the Nam constitution,” the statement reads.

Central Region Netball Committee Chairperson Yamikani Kauma was appointed General Secretary whereas Cecilia Mtukule was named Treasurer.
Others in the committee include Tamara Fweta, Fernando Ligola, Justice Katika and Margret Maluwa.
Meanwhile, Gubuduza welcomed the council’s stance and the affiliates’ decision.

“Humbled by the trust that the affiliates have placed on me and the team. We have work to do and, surely, netball must thrive. We will hear more about the mandate when we meet with council management soon,” Gubuduza said.
The Nam Executive Committee stepped down following relentless attacks from concerned affiliates over administrative flaws.
President Abigail Shariff, Vice President Junier Bamusi, General Secretary Isaac Chimwala, Vice General Secretary Diana Nkhulembe, Treasurer Agnes Chaima and Vice Treasurer Chauncy Munthali all signed the resignation letter.
