National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) over the weekend performed in Lusaka, Zambia in Southern African Development Community (Sadc) mission for a play titled Imaginary Harvest.

The team joined other actors from Zambia and Zimbabwe to stage the production despite facing shortage of funding.

Ntam Project Officer Samuel Kapinga said Tuesday that they had a successful outing in Lusaka staging Imaginary Harvest involving actors from three Sadc countries of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“The production was patronised by high profile people which was good for the progress of the initiative. Now we have been invited to Zimbabwe festivals from July to October 2026,” Kapinga said.

He said they will participate in such opportunities to expose Malawi’s talent to the world.

“Despite not getting enough support, we would like to thank those who came in with support including Copyright Fund, Zambian officials, Department of Arts and its line ministry for technical guidance,” Kapinga said.

Actor Mphundu Mjumira, who is part of the cast, said the show lived up to its stature and that people loved the performance.

“There were people after the show that came and said we gave them the picture of how the colonialists were defeated. The play also talks of Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia being one because people inter-married,” he said.

He said the actors from the three countries also learned from each other and shared notes for the growth of theatre in Southern Africa.

The performance in Zambia followed a premiere in Malawi last year during the University of Malawi Theatre Festival in November.

Apart from Mjumira, the other actors from Malawi included, former Ntam leader Maxwell Chiphinga popularly known as Max DC and Mildred Murindiwa.

National Theatre Arts Association of Zambia (Nataaz) Chairperson Moses Mtonga said that the production marks a significant milestone in regional theatre cooperation and artistic exchange.

Mtonga said Imaginary Harvest discusses the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, what led to the abandonment of the federation, how the three sister nations were affected by the federation.

The mission known as ‘Fostering Regional Social Ties through Theatre’ is a project funded through Copyright Fund.
