Police in Lilongwe have arrested Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda.
They have also arrested Vitumbiko Mumba who was runningmate for MCP president Lazarus Chakwera during the September 16 elections.
Chimwendo said he had been charged with attempted murder. He said this while police officers were escorting him into Kanengo Police Station.
“The charges are that when I was MCP Youth Director, I attempted to murder the then MCP Youth League member Frank Chiwanda,” Chimwendo said.
Earlier in the morning, Chimwendo arrived at Area 30 Police Headquarters wearing a white shirt and black trousers.

He was taken from his home in Area 47 at around 11:30 a.m.
Mumba’s arrest is linked to comments he made at a press briefing in Lilongwe after the September 16 general elections. At the briefing, Mumba highlighted what he said were irregularities with the elections.
Mumba is being kept at Lingadzi Police Station.
National Police spokesperson Leal Chimtembo confirmed the arrests but he declined to give more details, until an official statement.
