President Lazarus Chakwera has commended Chitipa United for performing beyond expectations in the TNM Super League last season.
The team finished fourth in the top flight league.
He was speaking after touring construction works at Chitipa Stadium, which is expected to be the home ground for the team.
“Chitipa coaches and players give us hope that something good can also come from Chitipa. I am also happy that even other small teams within the district are doing well and that is what makes Malawi a truly sporting nation, in terms of football,” Chakwera said.
He said Chitipa, who beat both Blantyre giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers by 1-0 margins last season, deserve a ground in the district.

According to Chakwera, he will make sure that the design of the facility is impressive, and that the project is implemented and completed in time.
On his part, Chitipa Chairperson Fidelis Kambalame said Chakwera’s visit has given them hope that the facility would be ready for use soon.
“Once the stadium is completed, we are going to save money. Currently, we spend a lot of money travelling to Karonga. On top of that, it will help us generate resources through gate revenue,” Kambalame said.
He said by finishing on position four last season, the team demonstrated potential that it can win the league title in the near future.

Before touring the facility, Chakwera greeted the team’s players, committee members, traditional leaders and other government officials, including Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire.
Chitipa District Council Director of Planning and Development Jossen Tembo said fans spend a lot of money on transport costs as they are forced to travel and watch matches at Karonga Stadium.
Despite having a lean budget, Chitipa amassed 48 points, 12 points behind champions Bullets, in the TNM Super League.
