The main organising committee for the 2023 Presidential Charity Golf Tournament has disclosed that this year’s tournament, scheduled for October 7 at Lilongwe Golf Club, is targeting to raise about K400 million.
Chairperson for the main organising committee Vizenge Kumwenda disclosed this after meeting President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe Monday.
The charity golf tournament returns after a successful event last year, when K281 million was raised for the good cause.
Through a statement, Chakwera said the need for charitable activities this year is greater than ever following Cyclone Freddy in March, cholera outbreak in January and the drought in the north, destroying crops in February.
“This cause is so dear to me that I have been willing to stake my own name and reputation on it by giving all participants my assurance that the funds raised will be exclusively dedicated to aiding deserving students and the most vulnerable survivors of natural disasters,” Chakwera said.

In his remarks, Kumwenda appealed to companies and individuals to support the good cause.
“We had a fruitful meeting with the President and we assured him that we will be able to achieve our target. We appeal to companies and individuals to support the good cause,” Kumwenda said.
Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) President Gift Gondwe said the union is ready to support the good cause.
“Our mandate is to encourage the golfers and everyone of goodwill to take part in the fundraising tournament. We are optimistic that we will be able to meet the target. It is important to be part of the event,” Gondwe said.

The tournament was launched last year and, by then, the focus was also to raise funds for needy tertiary students and support underprivileged people in the country.
Through the initiative, the committee was able to reach out to survivors of tropical cyclones with relief items such as blankets, maize seed and materials worth K120 million.
During the inaugural edition, Chakwera participated and played all the 18 holes alongside golfers.
Vice President Saulos Chilima also participated in the inaugural event.
