The Roads Authority has said it requires K7.96 trillion in funding for it to implement its five-year strategy and business plan which aims to improve the country’s road network.
Launching the strategy and business plan in Lilongwe yesterday, Roads Authority chairperson, Matilda Matabwa, said the plan would run from 2025 to 2030.
She said the strategy is designed to achieve the authority’s mission of developing and maintaining a high-standard public road network across the country.
Matabwa said the five-year plan prioritizes road connectivity, economic growth and road safety with a focus on connecting different districts with a road network rehabilitating paved roads and constructing new bridges.

“In the next five years, we want to connect communities and districts with a good road network, we want to ensure that people have access to good roads, which will boost economic activity and improve overall quality of life,” Matabwa said.
Minister of Transport and Public Works Jacob Hara urged the Roads Fund Administration to source more funds to transform the country’s road network.
He said good roads help in connecting people and facilitating economic activity.
“By 2030, we want to ensure that Malawi has a good road network, especially with the country venturing into mining, good roads are essential for economic growth and development,” Hara said.

Established by an Act of Parliament in 2006, the Roads Authority is responsible for construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of the public road network, which is classified into five categories, namely main roads, secondary roads, tertiary roads, urban roads and district roads.
On the other hand, government also established the Roads Fund Administration, also in 2006, to collect, administer and account for funds for construction and maintenance of roads in Malawi.
The Roads Fund Administration allocates to the implementing agencies financial resources for the maintenance and rehabilitation of public roads.
It finances the approved programmes and emergencies according to financing agreements entered into between the RFA and the implementing agencies
