“I want to help the team do well. Even though the squad is full of youthful players, the onus is on us to help the team,” Chawinga said.
Seychelles coach Florence Marie praised her charges despite the downfall.
“I am very proud of how my team has played. We are a young team. The youngest is 13 years and our keepers are 15 and 16. They are still young. I think we have given more than Malawi,” Marie said.
Both teams will meet again on Thursday at the same venue.
The Scorchers are in Group A of this year’s Cosafa Cup alongside hosts South Africa, Madagascar and eSwatini.
They will start their campaign against South Africa on October 4 before meeting eSwatini three days later.
Malawi will finish their group stage campaign against Madagascar on October 10.
Twelve teams are taking part in this year’s tournament.
They have been divided into three groups of four each. The group winners will advance to the semi-finals and will be joined by the overall best runners-up.
Malawi failed to reach the semi-finals last year as they exited in the group stages following one win, a draw and loss.
