The National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) will have to wait a little longer for Football Association of Malawi (Fam) officials to discuss and ratify the constitution on its request for equal voting rights.
Last year, NWFA requested that Fam member associations should be sending an equal number of delegates to the national football governing body’s annual general meetings (AGM).
However, the proposal has not been included on the agenda items which Fam has circulated to its member associations.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda clarified that the association was currently undergoing constitutional review.
“Constitutional review is a process that is ongoing and has not been concluded. And the issue is not for discussion at the AGM,” Gunda said.

Meanwhile, NWFA General Secretary Lustica Gondwe has expressed optimism that Fam will, at some point, consider the matter.
“We will keep waiting as we still fight to attain equal representation at AGMs, as it is the case with other affiliates,” Gondwe said.
Currently, the Super League of Malawi contributes eight delegates whereas regional affiliates—Central Region Football Association, Northern Region Football Association, Southern Region Football Association and the newly established Eastern Region Football Association—will provide six delegates each.
NWFA, alongside National Youth Football Association (NYFA), Beach Soccer Association (BSA), National Referees Association (NRA) and National Football Coaches Association (NCFA), supply two delegates each.

However, football analyst Henry Gome said the concerns from NWFA were justified.
“In this case, it is not only the National Women’s Football Association but the rest of the associations—including the referees [NRA], coaches [NFCA), youth [NYFA] and beach soccer [BSA]— that need equal representation during AGMs. Stakeholders lobbied for this in the past but they were not successful.
“It is our hope that the issue will, at some point, be tabled during an AGM to amend the constitution,” Gome said.
Fam officials will from Thursday to Friday this week meet in Salima, where there will be a two-day orientation for affiliates before holding the AGM on Saturday.
