SHARE

By Isaac Salima:

Burial of seasoned lawyer, Ralph Kasambara, will take place tomorrow, Monday, at his home village in Nkhata Bay, a family member has indicated.

Kasambara who served as the country’s as Attorney General and Minister of Justice died suddenly in Lilongwe on Friday.

As we went to press Saturday, the body was to be moved to his residence in Blantyre for last respects and was scheduled to be ferried to Nkhata Bay today ahead of the burial Monday at Chijere Village in Traditional Authority Timbiri, according to the uncle to the deceased, Savious Kasambara.

He added that they have identified a private doctor to conduct a postmortem to find out the cause of the death.

And tributes continue to pour in on Kasambara’s death.

President Lazarus Chakwera and the First Lady Monica Chakwera said in a statement Saturday that they are deeply saddened with Kasambara’s passing.

They described him as a dedicated and prominent figure in the legal fraternity.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. Ralph’s contributions to the development of our nation particularly in the fields of law and justice will never be forgotten,” reads the statement.

Writing on his Facebook page legal practitioner Khumbo Soko described Kasambara as a brilliant lawyer.

“One of the finest legal minds that this country has ever produced. His research skills were incomparable and his ability to devise a winning litigation strategy was devastating.

“In our profession, the honour of Senior Counsel is reserved for elite and distinguished lawyers. And he clearly earned his stripes. The contributions that he made to the development of our law will never be wished away. He has left a mark that will survive the hurricanes of time,” Soko wrote.

Malawians and several other legal practitioners have also taken to the social media with their tributes for him.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said they will provide more details on the death after the postmortem.

“Right now, I can only confirm that he was found lying dead in his room at a lodge in Area 47. He was alone in the room at the time and a waitress saw his body on the floor. He had gone to Lilongwe for family matters and he was at the lodge which is his regular place when he is in the city,” Kalaya said yesterday.

Kasambara, 56, is survived by a wife and three children.

Kasambara served as Malawi’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice in Bingu wa Mutharika and Joyce Banda’s regimes
