The Ministry of Information and Digitalisation says Malawi has received a $150 million grant from the World Bank for implementation of digital transformation initiatives in the country.
This comes as 80 percent of Malawians who live in rural areas have no access to a smartphone and internet.
Speaking after the opening of the Information, Technology, and Communication (ICT) Expo 24 in Lilongwe on Thursday, Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu said the digital economy is key to unlocking new opportunities.
He said the country is striving for digital inclusion to thrive in the digital age.
“Investing in the ICT sector is very crucial not only for economic gains but is also one of the pillars of attaining the MW2063. I believe this conference will explore how leveraging digital technologies can unlock opportunities for socio-economic growth, foster innovation and empower individuals and communities to participate more actively in the digital economy,” Kunkuyu said.
Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) Association of Malawi (Ictam) Chairperson Clarence Gama said technology is a catalyst for a turnaround of the country’s economy.
Gama said Ictam will continue to stand firm to help the country to grow in the ICT sector.
He added that the expo is an opportune time to explore the transformative power of digital technology.
“This is a thrilling moment to see so many innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders in one place, united by a shared vision for digitally empowered Malawi. Let us work together to harness the power of digital technology and create a brighter future for Malawi,” Gama said.
Among other things, they will be showcasing cutting edge innovations and solutions that are shaping the future of Malawi’s digital landscape.
The 2024 international ICT expo embraces the theme “Digital Transformation, Gateway to Economic Empowerment,” underscoring the pivotal role of digital innovation in fostering economic growth and empowerment.
