Malawi National Dance Troupe is set to fly the country’s flag in Japan later this month. The government of Japan through the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre has invited the Malawi National Dance Troupe to perform at the Japan World Expo 2025 in Osaka.
Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture Humphrey Mpondaminga said yesterday that Malawi National Dance Troupe will perform in Japan on June 18 2025. “The performances will be part of the Malawi Day whereas Malawi will showcase Malawian brands in terms of trade and present some cultural performances from Malawi,” Mpondaminga said.
Inaugurated in April this year, the Japan World Expo 2025 is a global event meant to showcase innovation, trade and culture. “The event aims at bringing together the wisdom of the world, expanding domestic and overseas investment and creating innovation through human interaction,” Mpondaminga said.
He also said that the Expo is key in that it aims to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. “It will be important for the Malawi National Dance Troupe to showcase Malawian cultural performances and show traditional dances such as Vimbuza, Manganje and Chisamba,” Mpondaminga said.
He further said that apart from promoting Malawi’s culture through cultural expressions to global audiences, the dance troupe will also use the performances to promote tourism and visibility for Malawi. Cultural Standards Officer and Acting Choreographer for the Malawi National Dance Troupe, James Thole said a 10-member group will leave for Japan on June 14 2025.
