Malawi, where is love?

In the land that proudly bears the moniker ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’, a chilling question now haunts our collective conscience: Malawi, where is love? In just these past days, Malawi has been shaken to its core, exposing a brutal underbelly of violence that cuts against everything we claim to be.

The horrifying killing of Dr. Victoria Bobe, a 33-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist and lecturer at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, has ignited a nationwide outcry. As reported, armed intruders stormed her home in Chigumula Township, Blantyre City, shot her at close range in the head, and left a nation stunned, grieving and searching for answers.

The attackers escaped with nothing more than a laptop and two empty bags, items so insignificant compared to the life they stole. Although police have launched an investigation into the issue, the sorrow hangs heavy in the air, a painful reminder of how deeply this loss has pierced the soul of the nation.

Then, there is the anguished cry for justice over the death of a young woman from Chirimba Township, again in Blantyre City, where her body was found wrapped in a chitenje in a quiet alley. Her killing has sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage. Members of her community demand an urgent, transparent investigation, an insistence on accountability that should be basic in a civilised society.

These are not isolated tragedies. In Karonga, a man in his 30s was brutally assaulted by a mob, accused of practising witchcraft, set on fire and buried in a shallow grave earlier in 2025. Meanwhile, in Dedza District, a police officer on duty was murdered by a mob, which stoned him to death after he intervened in a kidnapping attempt. And in Mzimba District, a grieving family is demanding justice after a man was reportedly shot at by police. These incidents are becoming all too familiar; each one is a grotesque reversal of the empathy and neighbourliness we once associated with our nation.

What does it mean for the Warm Heart of Africa to be synonymous with such brutality? These are not random acts of violence; they are symptoms of deeply rooted social mistrust, cynicism and impunity. When even respected professionals can be killed in their own homes, it undermines more than just personal safety; it erodes our sense of humanity.

Dr. Bobe was not just a healer; she was a mentor, a role model, a promise of better care for women in our country. The young woman from Chirimba was not just a victim; she was a daughter, a friend—a life that should have mattered. The man in Karonga was not just a scapegoat of superstition; he was a human being failed by society’s fears. And the officer in Dedza was, first and foremost, a civil servant, fulfilling his duty to protect.

We, as citizens, must demand more than calls for investigations; we must insist on justice, prevention and transformation. The authorities must not only catch perpetrators but dismantle the conditions that make such horrors so frequent: the culture of mob justice, the normalisation of armed invasions and the failure of policing to protect the vulnerable. We must also ask ourselves: Are we living up to the promise of our national identity? The Warm Heart of Africa is no slogan if our hearts are hardened by violence, if compassion yields to fear, and if love is replaced by terror.

To the government, civil society, faith leaders and community elders, now is the time to speak plainly and act decisively. Strengthen the justice system, reform policing and invest in community reconciliation. Empower citizens through education; confront superstition with reason; challenge the impulse to punish outside the law.

And to every Malawian, look into your heart. Ask not just where the love has gone, but how you can help restore it. Malawi’s greatest strength, when it works as it should, lies not in its landlocked geography, but in the warmth of its people; their care for one another; their commitment to justice; and their shared humanity.

Malawi, where is love? It is time to answer that question not with despair, but with determination. Let us rebuild not only our nation but also our compassion. For when the Warm Heart of Africa beats, it must beat for every Malawian without exception, zaonjeza!
