Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have concluded the hunt for a new coach with former Malawi National Football Team coach Meck Mwase among the favourites to get the job.
Wanderers have been without a coach for over a month now since the resignation of Mark Harrison in December last year.
In a bid to ensure the smooth flow of the process, the Nomads set up a special technical committee to oversee interviews which were conducted on Monday.
Committee chair Yasin Osman said they had submitted the name of the coach to take up the hot seat but declined to reveal his identity.
Osman also refused to state whether the incoming mentor is local or foreign.
“We did the interviews and the coach has been identified. I submitted a report to the club’s president and he will meet the board for approval. That is all I can say,” the local football legend said.
Mwase confirmed attending the interviews.
“I indeed went for the interviews and did my part. I am just waiting for the results. They are the ones to decide who takes up the job. I do not know what my chances are. So let us just wait and see what happens next,” he said.
A fortnight ago, Wanderers confirmed that about 25 coaches, including 15 Europeans, applied for the vacant post.
The team’s former star Sherry Msuku said he remains confident that the board will appoint a coach who will bring results.
“The board just needs to speed up the process as clubs will start regrouping very soon for preseason. Whoever is coming to Wanderers must be a coach full of experience.
“I have heard about several names, including that of Mwase, but the final decision lies with the board. I am sure the appointment will be on merit,” Msuku said.
Mwase helped the Flames to qualify for their third Africa Cup of Nations finals appearance in 2021.
But he travelled to the finals in Cameroon as an assistant to Mario Marinica, guiding the team to the round of 16 for the first time.
