The Public Appointments Committee (Pac) of Parliament has confirmed the appointment of commissioners for the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC), with Jimmy Korea Mpatsa appointed as the new chairperson.
The confirmation follows the commissioners’ appearance before Pac members on January 14, 2026, after their appointment was announced by the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) on December 9, 2025.
According to a statement from the CFTC, other commissioners include Pastor Frackson Kuyama, lawyer David Kanyenda, Dr. Ronald Mangani, Mary Daka, Selina Mwenelupembe and Ian Kwepu.
The commission also has the Secretary to the Treasury, the Secretary for Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism, the Solicitor General, and the Director General of the Malawi Bureau of Standards, who serve as ex-officio members.
“This is in accordance with Section 7(7) of the Competition and Fair Trading Act,” the statement reads.

Commenting on the issue, Mpatsa said the commission would operate strictly within the provisions of the Competition and Fair- Trading Act.
“We will be operating under the CFTA, which essentially promotes competition in the market while prohibiting unfair trade practices. The Act also seeks to regulate monopolies and protect consumer welfare. These are the principles that will guide our work,” Mpatsa said.
He further expressed the commission’s commitment to making a positive contribution to Malawi’s economy.
The CFTC Commission is mandated to provide policy oversight to the CFTC secretariat while also performing a quasi-judicial role by making determinations on cases investigated by the secretariat.
