By Peter Fote in Windhoek, Namibia:
Team Malawi has finished on position six out of 10 at the just-concluded African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia, after collecting a total of 32 medals, including seven gold ones.
Even though Team Malawi has failed to match the haul of the 2022 Region 5 Games, when the country hosted the event in Lilongwe, the team’s overall finish is impressive compared to three years ago.
In 2022, Team Malawi collected 37 medals comprising two gold, 10 silver and 25 bronze but this time the team has seven gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals.
Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata said they were satisfied with the team’s performance as the focus was on their long-term athletes’ development programme.

“When it comes to performance, I am extremely impressed with the performance of most sport codes, except for a few where we still have some work to do if we are to be competitive on the international stage.
“Further, it is important to reckon that the rating of a country’s performance is based on the gold medals. In this regard, Team Malawi has done extremely well, with seven gold medals for the first time in the history of Malawi. We are building a team of athletes for tomorrow and we will deliver on this,” Kamata said.
Malawi finished on 6th rank from the 10 countries which competed.
South Africa defended position one, with the highest number of medals.
