By Isaac Salima:
Malawi Congress Party publicist Jessie Kabwila is demanding compensation of K500 million from Blantyre City South East parliamentarian Sameer Suleman for defamation.
In a demand letter written through Jivason and Company, Kabwila, who is also Minister of Higher Education, is accusing Suleman of twisting a joke made by Trade and Industry Minister Vitumbiko Mumba on her.

Suleman is said to have made the remarks during a political rally addressed in Blantyre.
“Honourable Mumba and our client are friends and they tend to crack jokes about many issues. In your remarks at the said Blantyre rally, you put false remarks in the mouth of honourable Vitumbiko Mumba by severely attacking our client stating that honourable Vitumbiko Mumba had said that our client did not bathe,” the letter reads.

The letter is also accusing Suleman of continued attacks on Kabwila.
“Our client is surprised that you have been consistent in attacking her. During the last meeting in Parliament, you also humiliated our client in the National Assembly when you stated that our client is ugly and looks like gule wamkulu and does not bathe in the same way another Cabinet minister bathes,” it says.
Suleman has since been given seven days to pay the money or face legal action.
Suleman said his lawyer is handling the issue.

“The person I was mentioning at Bangwe was Kabwilabwila. Has she changed name? She should instead sue her fellow minister who was attacking her. I do not know what she is saying. And on the remarks made in the House, she could have reflected on what she is claiming. Issues that are mentioned in Parliament should not be challenged by lawyers. She could have complained to the Speaker [of Parliament],” he said.
