Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has handed over the Mzuzu Airport– M1 Road Rehabilitation Project to a contractor.
It indicates that the project, which is expected to be completed within four months, will cost K1.3 billion.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mzuzu City Mayor, Councillor Chiyembekezo Moses, said the council expected quality work.
The 600-metre stretch, set to be upgraded to a concrete surface, is in a poor state, riddled with potholes that motorists have complained about for years.
“The road is very important and one of the busiest in Mzuzu,” Moses said.

Pamodzi Consulting Limited Highway Engineer Christopher Kamkwamba said the scope of work includes completely ripping off the existing surface.
Kamkwamba said the new design will use concrete due to the area’s water-logged nature, noting that rigid pavement offers greater durability than flexible pavement.
“We will use gravel material for the sub-base, after which concrete will be placed. It is important to note that rigid pavement accommodates heavier loads than flexible pavement. We, as consultants, will ensure the contractor adheres to all contractual obligations and technical standards,” he said.
The road has been assigned to Jags Engineering Limited.
