As part of efforts to address the problem of food insecurity among families affected by the effects of El Niño, Oxfam has intensified support to vulnerable households.
Officials say this is being done through a project funded by Global Affairs Canada.
Oxfam Programme Humanitarian Coordinator Agnes Lumphezi Banda has cited Chikwawa as one of the beneficiary districts, saying over K266 million was disbursed to 1,450 households.
“Each household received K184,000 to help them purchase food and other essential items. The initiative also seeks to reduce reliance on harmful coping mechanisms while strengthening the dignity autonomy, and resilience of affected families,” she said.
On Wednesday, beneficiaries drawn from group village heads Nkhwangwa and Mphamba received cash assistance.

“The intervention is guided by findings of the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) report. Based on the Mvac report, there have been serious challenges, in terms of food security, across the country. We are here to support communities affected by food insecurity,” Banda said.
One of the beneficiaries, Ruth Daimon, said “the money has come at the right time”, urging other well-wishers to emulate the example.
This distribution follows the initial lean-season response launched in early 2025, during which the first round of cash transfers was conducted in March 2025.
Following the current cycle, the project is expected to conclude its support with a final distribution scheduled for February 2026.
