Malawi National Netball Team duo goalkeeper Towera Vinkhumbo and Joyce Mvula endured a bad start to the 2024 Netball Superleague season after their respective team’s lost opening matches on Saturday.
Vinkhumbo’s Strathclyde Sirens lost to Team Bath 53- 49 while Mvula’s Leeds Rhinos went down to Severn Stars 57-41.
However, Sirens put up a spirited performance but failed to win the match despite Vinkhumbo’s brilliance.
“Team Bath were made to work for their 53-49 win over Strathclyde Sirens but ultimately held on to taste victory. Bath then eked out the lead to four points at half-time before Strathclyde Sirens hit back as their connections started to click, with newcomer Sammy Ngubane impressing on her debut.
“Towera Vinkhumbo delivered a customarily strong performance with seven gains and seven deflections but could not stop Sophie Kelly’s long bombs as Team Bath powered to a narrow win,” reported www.netballsl.com.

On the other hand, Mvula could not help Rhinos win after spending a season away with Central Pulse in New Zealand.
Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary Isaac Chimwala did not answer our call to comment on the duo’s performance.
However, netball analyst Lusekelo Kayuni encouraged the two not to get worried with the results.
“Towera had a grand game while Mvula did not get much service from her attackers. It is only the start of the season. Let them continue working hard,” Kayuni said.
